One of my most vivid memories of Penny is also my earliest. I must have been about 6, Penny about 13. All the Francis cousins were sitting in the pub garden in Cadgwith, each with the statutory bottle of pop and packet of crisps, when a low flying seagull deposited a large lump of guano on top of my head. I was mortified. Penny was not. In fact Penny thought it was one of the funniest things she had seen for a long time and let out a peal of laughter which filled the pub garden and which echoes down over the decades to me now. I soon saw the funny side too, particularly after, with her usual kindness, she had helped to mop me up. Penny had a keen sense of the ridiculous and relished the funny side of life - one of the many reasons why she was such wonderful company and why she leaves so many happy memories with all of us.
